Is the clam shell from my strawberries recyclable?  What about this compostable fork?  How many times have you stood in front of your colored cans with something in your hand and you have that internal debate with yourself – Landfill?  Recycle?  Green can?  I know I have!  

Marin Sanitary Service has a fantastic online tool called “Where Does It Go, Joe?” to answer your questions. And sadly, compostable plastics, including most products certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) cannot be processed by Marin Sanitary Service and therefore must go into the grey landfill can.  This includes all biodegradable bags, coffee/drinking cups, plastic utensils and paper products lined with wax or plastic.  However, it still makes a long term difference to use the newer compostable items that will eventually break down versus the old school plastic that will continue on and on and on . . .

It is so very important that the recycling stream remains clean, so please use the “Where Does It Go, Joe?” tool to make sure you choose the right bin to dispose of your waste.
